The One That Got Away: A Villanelle

She always was the one to walk away.
She thought she knew when the timing was right.
“You know we’ll both be better off,” she’d say.

She noticed that there always came a day
when instinct told her it was time for flight —
she always was the one to walk away.

She’d pour herself a glass of cabernet
and raise a toast to bid her love goodnight:
“You know we’ll both be better off,” she’d say.

She thought it a strange pattern that decay
would find its strength when love was at its height.
She always was the one to walk away.

She kept a calm, cool aura on display,
convinced herself that it would be all right —
“You know we’ll both be better off,” she’d say.

Though confident, she did feel some dismay
that there was nothing in her line of sight.
She always was the one to walk away.
“You know we’ll both be better off,” she’d say.
