Good Morning

I don’t know whether you know my name yet,
but I want you to know it.
Maybe it’ll be like Cake said —
we’ll start to talk when I borrow your pen.
Or maybe I’ll just blurt it out one day
when I say my standard, “Have a good night.”
Instead I’ll say,
“I’m Sam. You’re adorable. Have a good night.”
and then I’ll run through the gallery
and bolt out the door before my face gets red
and all my brazenness wears off.
Or maybe next time when we’re talking about nothing,
I’ll say, “I’m Sam, by the way.
I don’t think I ever introduced myself.”
and I know I’ll subconsciously
tuck my hair behind my ear while I say it
because I’ve been doing that since I was twelve.
In the end, I don’t know how it’ll happen
or whether it ever will.
All I know is that I want it to —
that I want you to know my name.

  1. (voice of Cassandra in Wayne’s World) “Why don’t you just go talk to [him]?”
